The Business Roundtable was privileged to have Aboriginal leader and founder of the Cape York Institute Noel Pearson deliver the 2010 Sir Ronald Trotter Lecture Pathways to Prosperity for Indigenous People.
Noel Pearson is one of Australia’s most respected and influential thinkers and activists. He has spent much of the past decade promoting a wholesale shift in indigenous policy, notably in relation to welfare, substance abuse, child protection, and indigenous participation in economic development. He argues that so-called ‘progessive’ approaches to these issues merely serve to keep people dependent on welfare and out of the ‘real’ economy.
Addressing a full house at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in a sweeping talk that ranged across welfare, education, employment, property rights and many other indigenous policy issues, Noel provided a rare balance of historical, philosophical and economic perspectives along with many anecdotes and practical examples of his ideas at work .
After a stimulating question and answer session Tainui Group CEO Mike Pohio gave a vote of thanks that summed up the audience’s palpable appreciation of a truly inspiring lecture.
