Ideology, Economics and Public Policy
17 October 2008, Graham Scott
My thesis is that there has been some diminution of the place of economics in the development of public policy. I will try to explain why I think this has happened and why it is a probable contributing cause of some poorly designed state institutions that are undermining the quest for productivity improvement across the economy.

Nudging Us Into the Third Way?
9 October 2008, Roger Kerr
Now a new attempt at a third way has come along in the form of a book titled Nudge... Their basic idea is very simple and familiar. By 'nudging' they mean slightly tilting the playing field to make it easier for us to choose certain things in preference to others. But full individual freedom of choice is retained.

Moral Markets
1 October 2008, Roger Kerr
In the first place, genuinely free and open markets enable individuals to promote their own, self-chosen goals (which do not have to be selfish) as opposed to being exploited in order to promote other people's goals. So markets promote liberty, autonomy, personal responsibility and self-determination.

Are Voters Irrational?
10 July 2008, Roger Kerr
Bad policies typically confer a benefit on a small number of citizens but a much greater cost on the public as a whole. Thus an import tariff benefits import-competing industries but imposes a disproportionate burden on exporting industries, whose costs are increased by the tariff, and on consumers, who have to pay higher prices for both domestic and imported goods than they would if trade were free.

Leadership
5 March 2008, Alan Gibbs
Peter Blake was a good friend of mine. He was a great man; a leader, an inspiration, and someone who was fun to be around. I don't go looking to give speeches these days, but I'm pleased to talk about the Peter Blake Leadership Awards. They are a fitting tribute to the man and they help keep alive some of the ideals that so animated him during his life.

The Black Swan
26 January 2008, Roger Kerr
The world in the year 2000 was in some ways strikingly similar to the world in 1900. Both were periods of globalisation: in preceding decades international trade had become progressively freer and international capital flows had been liberalised, leading them to increase hugely.

Misguided Corporate Virtue and the Role of Business Today
4 April 2007, David Henderson
There is today a general consensus, both within the business world and outside it, that businesses today should embrace and put into effect 'Corporate Social Responsibility' (CSR) and pursue the goal of 'sustainability'. That consensus is well represented here today. I am not part of it. I am a critic and an opponent of CSR. Further, I think that the world would be a worse and not a better place if businesses in general made a commitment to sustainability as a leading or primary aim, and that the consequences would all the more unfortunate in so far as that commitment was genuine and effective...
